About Us

The adventure of raising buffalo resulted from a family vacation to beautiful Yellowstone National Park. The sight of the majestic bison was the inspiration for the dream of raising these incredible beasts. Upon returning home, the dream of starting a bison ranch was a continued fascination. The idea was discussed with family and friends but was met with skepticism. However, the dream would not subside. Then an advertisement for heifer bison calves was noticed in The High Plains Journal by a friend who passed along the information. A phone call with numerous questions in regards to raising bison was made to the owner, Richard Duff, who willingly and patiently shared his wealth of buffalo knowledge. After a brief discussion between partners, the decision was made to make the dream of raising bison a reality by purchasing two heifer calves. A trip to Scott City, KS was scheduled, and on December 20, 1999, the adventure of raising these magnificent beasts was launched.

Lonesome Prairie Bison offers high quality, grass fed bison meat that is hormone and antibiotic free. Bison meat is considered a healthy alternative to other meats as it has less calories than beef, chicken, pork, and sockeye salmon and has more protein and iron. It is flavorful, with a sweet and rich flavor without the wild game taste. Bison is naturally tender and can be prepared much the same as beef without special handling. The keys to preparing bison are slow and low. Since bison has less fat and marbling than beef, it cooks faster so be sure to cook it slower and on a lower temperature.

The Bison Ranch, which is nestled in the rolling prairies of north central Oklahoma, grew from the two original heifer calves to over forty in just three years. The dream of raising bison was expanded by adding feeder bulls to offer quality and healthy, grass fed bison meat to the public. The adventure of raising buffalo has been a magnificent journey with many stories to regale. For instance, when the first two arrived at the ranch and were released from the trailer, we expected them to charge out as the gate was opened. When nothing happened, we thought they had died while being transported to the ranch! We were stunned and peered into the trailer to find the heifers laying down just as content as they could be!
